The secret to health: how a balanced diet changes life

Today, we’re going to talk about how a balanced diet can be your best investment decision. Not in gold or stocks, but in your own health. The food we choose every day affects everything from our energy levels and sleep quality to our immunity and emotional state. And if you still think that a balanced diet is just about weight control, I’m ready to surprise you.

What is a balanced diet?

A balanced diet is a way of eating that aims to restore the proteins, fats, carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins, macro- and micronutrients the body needs for homeostasis and physical and mental activity.

As a nutrition expert, I explain that the secret lies in the balance of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates (PFC). For example, an excess of fast carbohydrates leads to sharp spikes in insulin, and their deficiency leads to a loss of energy.

It’s important to understand what a balanced diet includes. It includes:

  • The right ratio of PFC.
  • Controlling the number of calories that correspond to your activity level.
  • Variety of foods, without restrictions.

Let’s start with the basics. The main rule: the body should receive all the necessary macronutrients in the right proportions, taking into account your activity level and the goal – losing weight, gaining muscle mass, or maintaining health.

Proteins: building blocks

Proteins are the building blocks of muscles, hormones, and antibody production. Their consumption is especially important for those who are involved in bodybuilding, but that’s not what we’re talking about today 🙂

Sources: meat (except pork), fish, eggs, dairy products.
Why don’t I recommend pork? This meat contains too much saturated fat, which can disrupt lipid metabolism.

The norm for an adult is 1–1.5 g per kg of weight.

But vegans should carefully monitor their protein intake, as plant sources do not provide the full range of amino acids we need.

Fats: Not enemies, but allies

Fats are critical for hormonal balance and the absorption of vitamins (A, D, E, K). For example, women need slightly more fat to maintain a stable cycle than men do. Sources: eggs, fatty fish, avocados, nuts, seeds. The norm is 0.7–1 g per kg of weight.

Carbohydrates: Fuel for the body

70% of your diet should be complex carbohydrates, such as cereals, vegetables, and whole grains. They provide long-lasting energy, unlike sugar, which provokes insulin spikes and hunger after a couple of hours.

Carbohydrate consumption rate: 3–5 g per 1 kg of weight per day.

Balanced nutrition for children: basic rules

As a nutrition expert, I often hear parents ask, “Why is our child gaining weight?” The answer is always the same: an unbalanced diet and a sedentary lifestyle. But the good news is that you can fix it.

Why do children gain weight?

  • Family habits. If the refrigerator is dominated by convenience foods, and breakfast is a sandwich “on the run”, the child will not learn healthy eating habits.
  • “Empty” calories. Sweet drinks, snacks, and fast food are sources of excess energy that can be stored as fat.
  • Lack of exercise. Instead of playing outside, there are gadgets; instead of sports, there are cartoons.

Your own example is the basis of success

A child will not believe you if you eat a burger yourself and offer him broccoli. A balanced diet should become a family rule.

Start simple:

  • Replace sweets with fruits or berries. Forget about sugary sweets; just stop buying them.
  • Cook together! Try cooking together at home more often, using your favorite foods in ways that follow the principles of a balanced diet. Cooking together will help your child better understand food composition, learn to choose high-quality ingredients, and develop proper eating habits.
  • Teach through play. Children better perceive information when it is presented as entertainment. For example, my team and I created a SuGuard mini-course – animated lessons where characters talk about proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Your child will understand the basics of a balanced diet by watching cartoons.

Forget about strict restrictions!

There is no “magic pill” or one-size-fits-all diet that works for everyone. Diets are usually temporary and stressful for the body. Instead, a balanced diet is a way of life.
